The Winds of Irma

Hello! Keeping dry? The windy, rainy bands of Irma have arrived. It's a frightening sight to behold when a sudden strong gust wrestles the trees to an angle where you are sure they are going to snap. I have never experienced these tropical storm winds before and must admit I've been a bit wary. I do like the way the raindrops bombard the window and make a hazy garden picture. Our lights have been flickering, and many of our close neighbors have lost their power, but so far we've managed to stay connected. And even though it's only September, and even though the temperature isn't cold, and even though we are running the air conditioning...we have a cozy fire going - just in case we do lose power and need to cook (or heat up) dinner. Hoping everyone is safe tonight.

Before...

These have been quiet, beautiful, breezy days...the calm before the storm. For a little while, Irma looked like it was heading straight for Newnan, Georgia, but has now moved a bit west. We'll mostly  get some strong winds and a lot of rain. In case our power goes out, I've collected a wheelbarrow full  of sticks that we can burn to heat water or make some baked potatoes (never done this before in the summer - only during ice storms!).  We started off sunny, but the cloud bands started moving in late this afternoon. Our weather should start sometime late tonight/tomorrow a.m. School has already been cancelled for two days. I've got a nice stitching project to keep me busy. Prayers for those in Florida who are directly in it's path.

Summer Fun

A wonderful start to my 5 week summer vacation. A week in Florida (it rained every day, but no lightning so we could still swim in the shark habitat). More garden re-working. Still so much to do, but just doing what I can with the energy I have.  It's been raining quite a bit, but I think next week is supposed to be pretty. I try to get out early, before the really unpleasant heat begins! I've been adding shrubs and am so happy with them. Color with foliage when nothing is in bloom! Hope your summer is shaping up to be fantastic!

Winter Ran Away

Winter has been bullied out of the way by an obnoxious warm weather system. My poor garden! It looks forward to cold temperatures, and repays with great beauty come Spring. Not sure what to expect this year, but I have a feeling bugs will be running amok and making me and garden crazy! The warm weather also makes me anxious to get out and start digging, which is not a good idea because the poor dormant bulbs get terrorized by stabbing trowels. But there is lots of clean up to do in the way of raking up fall's bounty of leaf litter that blankets the garden (to keep it warm, lol), and a lot of garden "things" that were piled here and there during the great "tree removal" of  December. Many of these are heavy and I've been putting off getting out there and doing the unwelcome task of straining my back. My dearest sweet Hubby has promised to help me this afternoon get that drudgery done.

Goodness, so much to do and so little energy! I've been off work for a week and haven't really accomplished much. Daughter and I had a little "Girls Time Out", driving to the mountains and staying a few nights. What fun! We went last year and practically froze to death. This year we were wearing sleeveless shirts! Good grief!

January Incognito

Has there ever been a January more lost than this? Tornadoes, extremely high winds, warmer than warm temperatures, crazy. It makes the gardener in me itch to get outside, but you just really can't or you'll be spearing all those lovely little bulbs you can't see and can't remember where.

I ordered a lengthy list of plants the other day and can't wait for March to get them. This is a Christmas present from my dear sweet son. I'm just about to burst with excitement for the upcoming gardening season!

I'm watching my super-duper Falcons play for a chance to play in the Super Bowl. Looking pretty fantastic so far. We're expecting more drastic weather, and I worry about all those people in the Dome at the game. How scary. Where will they go?

This weekend was barely even there.  I have slept more since Friday than I think I've ever done. Left work Friday at 9:30, went to bed at 10, slept until 3, then back to bed a t 7:30 and slept until 10 the next morning. And so it's gone the whole weekend. I finally realized I had not been taking some of my medications which caused all of the tiredness. Whew, I was afraid I had some awful sleeping disease! I'm so happy to know it's just my senility kicking in. Better get that prescription picked up! Hoping for a much better week (being all correctly medicated, ya know). I honestly don't think I could possibly have been much less productive.

Happy thoughts and blessings to you.

The Garden is Morphing Again

I am excited for this gardening season. Last year I added a lot of shrubs to the garden. The picture above was taken in October, when my garden is usually ugly and messy.

I've removed the garden that was on the left. I could never get it right, and as I get older I want to just focus on one main area.  I replaced a part of that garden with a circle and a large urn. I've planted spring bulbs in the circle.  Behind the circle is a little cozy, shady spot.  I've been looking at some of the cute play areas for children. Our great grandchildren would love a place to play.

I have a gazillion leaves to blow to an area where I used to have a shade garden. It's just a big empty spot now, and it gets overrun with forest-y things that aren't wanted and grow better than anything in my garden. I'm hoping getting a deep layer of leaves will help keep it clean until I can decide what to do. You can see the stumps left from the huge trees we had removed. All the little piles of stuff is where the workers put things that were in the way of the trees. Goodness, I have soooo much to do. Aren't I lucky to live in Georgia where the temperature today was 74 degrees!

Gray

Today the sky is the color of ashes. it's gone from a flat gray to the mishmashing of
every gray color imaginable. It's the kind of sky I like - it hints at weather that may or may
not come. Even though our temperature is hovering around 52, there is some excitement around here because of the possibility  of some winter weather this weekend. We often get
a little winter precip shortly after Christmas, which makes us constantly comment on
the kind of Christmas we could of had, "if only...".I'm hopeful for the fun of being snowed
in with nothing but some yarn and a little loom. Seriously, it's the thing (my) dreams are made of.

January Calm

Misty, gray mornings with fog drifting among the trees...ah, January, how I love you! All the busy days of December moving into the soft and slow-moving January. This is when my mind switches to dreams of Spring and the garden and the tulips I planted in the fall; of learning new things, like weaving;  the pleasure of writing in a new, beautiful journal (my daughter gave me a new one for Christmas, but the kitty seems to have other plans) and of trying to get the house back in order (not happening).

There has been a huge flock of birds coming through every morning lately. It's an amazing sight, and you don't even have to wonder if they are there because they make some kind of noise! They move as one, from tree top to tree top, filling the branches so that in the dim morning light, the trees look like they have leaves, until one of them (the leader?) decides it's time to move and they all leave together, squawking as they go.

I've been learning to weave. A friend made me a loom using an old frame and some small nails. I love the calmness of weaving my needle in and out, seeing my thought come into being. I don't know anything about yarn. Not wanting to spend a lot while I'm learning, I've just been buying the cheap stuff at Michael's. Cheap or not, I am pretty happy with the results.

I love the beginning of a new year...everything seems....possible.
